Classifying Solar Glint in an Intertidal Zone

Abstract

Remotely sensed images on intertidal zones may inevitably contain patches of solar glint. These are flashes of light that would make portions of the image unidentifiable due to having very high measured amount of reflectance values for red, green and blue channels of the image. This paper uses images taken using a camera mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle taken at 10 meters above ground level on a low tide. In these images, flashes from the sun which we will refer to as solar glint are present in the images that come from a certain angle reflected from seawater. This paper shows the preparation, methodology and results of rule-based workflows to extract solar glint from intertidal zones where seagrass, sand, silt and seawater among others are present. © 2022 IEEE.
