A broader view of ethics and professional responsibility considers the chemical engineer's impact on humanity. The key point is that being a responsible engineer is defined by a connection to the human community, not only in the way the work is carried out, but also in the way one conceives of the work he or she is doing. These considerations motivated the Dept. of Chemical Engineering at Yangon Technological University (YTU) to conduct a project that has brought affordable electricity to more than 100,000 impoverished villagers living far from the electrical grid, using an environmentally friendly process that converts waste to energy.
