Revegetation has emerged as a promising strategy for restoring ecosystems affected by mining, but its efficacy and potential risks require thorough evaluation. This research conducts soil and crop analysis to evaluate heavy metal uptake of Chromium (Cr), Nickel (Ni), and Zinc (Zn) through X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy and the potential risks associated with the mobilization of residual contaminants in the crops. Results have shown an excessive heavy metal uptake in the soil and crops, exceeding the permissible limits set by the World Health Organization (WHO)/Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The bioconcentration factor has revealed that Zn accumulation in papaya is most likely retained in its fruit portions, which indicates a threat. This suggests that while other revegetation plants can significantly improve soil quality and support plant growth, planting agricultural crops needs to be cautiously considered.
