Using a tracker, the experiment traced the position of a tiny piece of eggshell that was placed on water with a natural convection current setup. The convection current was initiated by subjecting the leftmost part of the fluid container to heat. Using an infrared temperature detector, temperature measurements along three sections of the water were recorded. The results of the experiment revealed that the fluid motion, which is represented by the recorded position of the eggshell, is affected by the temperature variations in the liquid. It is observed that the fluid subjected to higher temperature ascends while liquid within cooler temperature descends, a general characteristic of convection current. The experiment can aid in-classroom visualisation of convection current for students’ enhanced conceptualisation. © 2025 IOP Publishing Ltd.
