Abstract

Previous research on well-being heavily relied on Western notions of happiness, but evidence suggests that East Asians prioritize low-arousal positive emotions like peace of mind (PoM). Lee et al. (2013) developed the Peace of Mind Scale as a measure of an individual’s experience of inner peace and harmony. The present study validated the Peace of Mind Scale among Filipino university students and investigated its relationship with academic engagement. There were 538 respondents participated in the study. Results showed the scale had adequate validity and invariance across genders. Correlation analyses revealed that PoM was positively associated with positive academic emotions while it had an inverse relationship with negative emotions. Furthermore, PoM positively predicted academic engagement even after controlling for other positive emotions. This indicates that PoM, like other positive emotions, is a vital determinant of academic engagement among Filipino tertiary students. © 2023, Universitatea din Oradea. All rights reserved.
