A movie of the moving temperature pointer of a dial-type thermometer was analysed in Tracker, a machine vision application, revealing a satisfactory match between the theory and the experimental data. Also presented is an empirical model for the time-dependent angular positions of the pointer. © 2021 IOP Publishing Ltd.
